Anonymous asked: What is your opinion of Lana Del Rey? Are you a fan of her music at all?

this is so weird! I was going to write an article about her today for my other blog but decided against it (I went for one about make-up instead if you’re interested HELLO SHAMELESS PLUG).

Now to your question, sorry about that haha. I do like her voice and her song Kinda Outta Luck is one of my favourites of the last few months. I understand the problems a lot of people have with her re: authenticity - she clearly doesn’t come from a trailer park and those are NOT her real lips, but for some reason I can’t bring myself to care very much about that. I read an article about her recently that talked about how all pop music has an element of exaggeration about it, and I have to say that I agree with that point of view. All she did was make herself a bit more exciting and it was a ballsy move to attempt to alter her entire life story. I appreciate ballsiness.

What I do find a little bit more sinister is the fact that she didn’t actually do all of that herself. Everything down to her name was sort of engineered by suits out to make a buck and that makes me a little bit sad. But then I remember that you know, she is a pop star, and regardless of whether the Pitchfork crowd liked her before the mainstream did, I don’t think she or her “people” have ever claimed that she’s anything other than that, and most big money pop music tends to have an eye on the business side of things 99% of the time.

I haven’t listened to her album yet but I’m sure that I will soon, and I’ll most probably enjoy it - I’m her target market to a tee. Sure, I’d prefer it if she was a total RAGS 2 RICHE$ story who really did make her music videos using Windows Movie Maker and a $50 handheld digital camera, but you can’t have everything. I like her music style and I’ve never been adverse to pop music, so yeah, in answer to your original question, I would call myself a casual fan.
