I made
a few New Year’s resolutions and so far I have stuck to all of them, super proud of myself. The biggest one I made was to read a book or more every week and so far I’ve kept to it, so I figured I’d make a post about my progress so far, cool! So far I have read:
- How To Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran - it was amazing and eye-opening and all of the wonderful things a non-fiction book should be (more of my thoughts on it here)
- Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer - singular and completely heartbreaking, I cried a lot! I’m kind of worried that the movie adaptation isn’t going to live up to what I imagined when reading it but I guess I’ll have to wait and see!
- Maggie Cassidy by Jack Kerouac - I loved this! It was really cool to see what Kerouac’s writing was like in his early days and in this book there are some moments where you can almost taste what he would be capable of in a few years time. In terms of story Maggie Cassidy is great - I’m pretty sure it’s autobiographical and there is a gorgeous innocence to the young Kerouac’s insights on first love. Would recommend!
- The Color Purple by Alice Walker - probably my favourite book that I read in January, it’s just fab (more opinions here)
- Shakespeare by Bill Bryson - I’m really starting to warm to non-fiction - this was a super interesting book that I really enjoyed, especially because it made me realise that before reading it I knew basically next to nothing about the big dog of English Literature, so it was fun to find out more!
and so concludes January; right now I’m re-reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and after that I’m not sure what I’ll choose! I’m having an excellent time with this New Year’s resolution and I am very happy that I decided to challenge myself!
